Description
German Tiger II with Porsche Turret, unofficially known as the Königstiger
This is one of my favorite tanks.
Developed 1943, it went into production 1944 by Henschel.
492 were produced, including the prototypes and the 50 with the Porsche turret, as seen here.
The Porsche turret was replaced by the Henschel due to the Henschel’s ease of manufacture, the elimination of the shot trap under the turret front, and elimination of the bulge below the commander’s hatch (a weak spot in the armour).
Front armour: 150 mm. at 45 degrees (= 210 mm. horizontally)
Side armour: up to 80 mm.
Armamanet: 88 mm. KwK L/71 gun, capable of penetrating the frontal armour of almost all tanks of the time at 3,500 meters. This included the Joseph Stalin 2 tank’s thick frontal armour at 2,300 meters.
Two 7.92 machine guns – one in hull front, other as anti-aircraft gun.
Engine: Maybach HL 230 P30 700 horse power V-12.
Road speed: 38 km/hour
Cross country speed: 15 km/hour
Range: 170 km.
Fuel consumption: 500 liters/100 km.
Crew: commander, driver, gunner. Loader, radio operator.
This is the 1:76 model kit by Revell GMBH, Germany. Assembled and painted by myself.
Enjoy!
Camera: Fujifilm A303 digital

Technically, both turrets were built by Krupp. It just happened that the Porsche chassis (50 produced) was produced first and to keep production moving got the initial batch (also 50) of turrets (P2 turm). The improved regular production turret (serien turm - production turret) just happened to wind up on the production contract winning Henschel chassis. I couldn't tell you if Henschel had any input in the turret changes or not but I doubt it. Nice build, by the way.
