Description
Jagdtiger
The Jagdtiger was developed 1943 in cooperation between Henschel and Krupp. It was based on the German policy to develop self-propelled guns based on new tank chasses, permitting mounting larger guns on the chassis. The King Tiger chassis was used for the development of the Jagdtiger. Delivery to the German army started April 1944.
Weight: 70 tons
Armament: 128 mm. PAK 44 L55 gun. To save space, shells and propellant were stored separately. 40 rounds were carried.
Two 7.92 machine guns, one in hull front, the other for anti-aircraft use.
Engine: Maybach HL230 P30, 600 horse power, V-12.
Speed: 38 km./hour
Crew: commander, two loaders, gunner, driver, radio operator.
Top front armour: 250 mm.
Front hull armour: 150 mm. upper plate, 100 mm. lower plate
Sides: 80 mm.
This made the vehicle immune against all Allied guns at battle distances.
Only some 156 Jagdtigers were produced before the factories were bombed.
As for the gun’s efficiency, German tank commander Otto Carius describes in his autobiography how a Sherman tank hid behind a stone barn in western Germany. Carius fired his 128 mm. gun – the shell went through both stone walls of the barn and exploded inside the Sherman – the Sherman’s turret flew way over the barn’s roof in the ensuing explosion.

This is one of those 'why did they bother' jobs. Was most useful as a pillbox due to mechanical issues. This was really the beginning of the end for German tank production, if they could get this to move, they couldn't supply it with enough fuel. They could turn out 12 Jagdpanzer or 9 Jagdpanthers for 1 of these.Maybe not as powerful but tried and tested and more importantly reliable and somewhat better on fuel consumption......sorry! bit of a pet subject, always gets me going.
