Description

Further along the Icefields Parkway is the Sunwapta Trading Post. This pair of totems is a mix of Canadian Eskimo and First Nation Canadian Indians. They are different from a totem, that I posted a while back, that was more of an eastern Canadian totem. The icons on these totems are very different. Sorry about me being in the photo again but when you travel and meet new people, everyone wants to take photos of everyone else, and they insist on taking one with your own camera. Zoom is good. Taken with a film camera (July & August 1988) and recently scanned. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

This is excellent and those are some pretty tall totems. The colors are nice and crisp, and I'm really attracted to the zoomed-in view, as I can see a bit of authentic photo-grain! WOW! In this day and age of digital photography, I find that I often have to postwork film-grain noise INTO a shot; there's a particular, satisfying quality to a good, but subtle amount of noise in an image...I think it is simply the fact that such visual artifacts recall a more tactile time, when photographs were these things on paper (sometimes shoved into a shoebox under the bed. I like the modern day, but I miss shoeboxes with photos in them.) This is a wonderful shot.

I have a real delight in totem poles and have one myself. Carved by a family I do not know but rescued from destruction. I have cared for it and honored it all the years I have had it. The stories they tell and the people they represent are incredible.
