Description

Athabasca Glacier, with the back side of Mt Kitchener (on the right) and snow coaches making their way up onto the glacier. Walking around, up there, wearing sneakers, was not the smartest thing for me to do. The glacier is so compact, that the melting ice pack water seems to rise to the surface and then run down the glacier, in little streams. There were lots of slush everywhere and in the lower spots, puddles of slushy water. Many people slipped and got very wet and cold. Some saw this and didnt leave the buses. There were spots where the water had melted holes large enough for a full grown person to fall in. Hundreds of feet straight down and lots of ice water at the bottom. Not a great chance of survival. But the experience of a life time. Some claimed to have felt the glacier move and I did not. This shot also provides a good look at all the silt that this glacier has pushed aside since the ice age began. Zoom is good. Taken with a film camera (July & August 1988) and recently scanned. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Amazing place!!! It's huge but I wonder how much is left now. It looks like giant waves coming down a hill. Just amazing.

Lots of cool contrast in this shot, Dana. The portion on the right reminds me of cowhide.
