Tiger I Ausf. E, late Development started in 1937 as a successor to the PzKw IV. Originally intended to carry the 75 mm. L48 high velocity gun, this was changed to the 88 mm. KwK36 gun. Porsche and Henschel competed with different designs. Henschel won the contract on reliability and maneuverability. Turret was made by Krupp. Weight: 56 tons Armament: 88 mm. KwK 36 L/56 gun Two 7.92 mm. machine guns, one in hull front, one for anti-aircraft use. Engine: Maybach HL 230 P45 V-12 generating 700 horse power. Speed: 37 km./hour Range: 115 km. on road, 65 km. cross country Crew: driver, radio operator, loader, gunner, commander. A total of 1,354 Tiger I Ausf. E were produced. Due to their immunity against all allied guns at battle range they came to be greatly feared by allied soldiers. With time, different means of defeating them were devised, such as the up-gunned British Sherman Firefly (housing the 17 lb. anti-tank gun) or attack from the air. 1:72 scale model by Hasegawa.
