Description

I went for a short walk about - or sail about - and ended up at St. Mawes Castle on the Roseland Peninsula overlooking the River Fal Estuary. No matter where I head, I always end up on the Fal! This was taken from the top of the splendid castle built around 1539 by old Henry - he of the chopping off heads fetish - and it is a wonderful piece of architecture. Far larger than it appears to be from without, the innards are on 4 levels and you get a running commentary via headphones while you ramble throughout the entire complex. You are also left alone to just get on with it, which is a rarity endeed and not to be sniffed at, although this visit I only went up one floor (you enter on the third floor), to the Battlements. Way off in the distance to the right, stands St Anthony's Head lighthouse, built in 1835, on the eastern side of the entrance to Falmouth Harbour. It warns of the Black Rock in the centre of the channel into Falmouth Harbour and also of Manacles rocks, south of the harbour entrance. It wasn't automated until 1987. Little bit of trivia - Falmouth used to be known by another name. "Pen-y-come-quick" - or "the head of the narrow vale" in reference to the easily defensable narrow harbour entrance. The expanse of water within the harbour is called the "Carrick Roads". I shall play catchup later! ^=^ Thank you for taking the time to look. ^=^
