Description
Arguably the most famous of Nara’s attractions are the deer that wander freely in Nara Park. According to legend, the god of the Kasuga Taisha came riding a white deer in the old days, so the deer enjoy protected status as envoys of the god; however, based on their current behavior, either the deer have lost the job, or the god has taken an extremely passionate interest in biscuits from tourists. You can buy the biscuits from kiosks and the deer, while adorable, can be very aggressive espcially if you ignore them to take pictures.
The image on the left was done using the sumi-e and watercolor filters. The image on the right is just my friend Larry torturing the deer.

Feeding animals seems rooted deep down in us humans. Naughty Larry to tease!

Great images, Mark! I'm surprised that the deer put up with Larry's teasing for so long

Sweet. I love the watercolor filter, lovely effect. Larry contrasts very well with the red umbrellas of the little girls behind him. Both scenes are charming and wonderful.

I remember the deer very well. I have some pictures of them too. I like the effects on the picture on the left. It gives it great atmosphere and makes me think of an image painted on a screen such as I saw in Japan. It looks like the girls in the back are being much more cooperative than Larry. Great interaction! I think the god has taken a passionate interest in biscuits. In Douglas Adam's book "The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul" Odin took a passionate interest in clean, pressed linen. Gods can be funny that way.
