Description
Well you can't teach the poetry, but you can teach the craft. -David HockneyI have received a great many questions during the past year, both within this gallery and by direct contact, regarding the techniques I use in my images. I have been asked many times if I would be willing to teach some of these methods, that others might employ the same techniques. After giving a lot of consideration to these requests I came to the conclusion that I could not offer much help solely through producing tutorials. The skills I use in crafting my images were learned over many years working in the photo studio and later with post production editing tools. Whatever techniques I teach would still require extensive additional learning and countless hours of practice to be of uncomplicated use. For the past several months I have been puzzling out and working on a process that would provide others a method for enhancing their image works. The heart of the puzzle has been figuring out how to convert what I've learned over the years into easy to use post work tools. I have now solved this. Through the coming days and weeks I will be introducing these tools (finishing elements would be a better description) with examples here in the gallery. This is not a commercial venture. Such as I shall be able to offer I offer freely. This includes making each element available in the Free library here at Ren'. The interest in these techniques has been expressed very sincerely and I am responding in kind. I dearly understand the desire to learn one's craft well. We can always improve our work by expanding our tool use and cultivating our skill set. Simplicity and ease of use has been my guiding rule in developing these creative elements. They will not transform your work without attention and effort. I promise, however, there is Magic in what I offer. You will see immediate results and you will be able to make them your own in countless ways. All you require materially is a graphics editor that supports layers and blending modes such as: Photoshop, PaintShop Pro or the freely available Gimp. The initial group of elements I am developing are called Finishing Sheets. As the names implies, these are to be utilized in the later stages of your editing. These sheets take the form of JPG images which I have invested with enhancement styles, textures and lighting effects. Call them Magic Sheets. ;-) To apply the magic crafted in the sheets open one of the JPGs in your editor, select and drag a copy on top of your image and select a blending mode. We will explore the many ways these sheets can be used and how here in the gallery and I will provide in-depth instructions with each sheet. As a preview I wanted to show you the first sheet which is called Fresh Canvas. I chose this one first because it is a good element for introducing the process and it is likely to be used more regularly than most others. These Finishing Sheets are designed to have a minimalist effect. Simply duplicating the layer of the initial sheet will intensify the texture by degrees. It is much easier to build up to an intended effect than work down from one which has been applied too heavily. You will see examples of this below. My intention is to free your creativity not limit it. Fine craft work seeks to hide the technique for the sake of bringing across an overall unifying effect. For now just get a sense for the idea of what I am building and feel welcome to ask any questions. May you be working on something beautiful this weekend. With warmth, Terry

La tua modella è semplicemente molto bella. ...mi sono soffermata per caso ed è stato veramente molto interessante e molto altruistico quando da te scritto. Non avevo mai pensato ad esempio, di suddividere un'immagine in verticale. Grazie. :) gea

Legolie: "I will follow your explanations, hoping the language will not a difficulty for me." I understand that in-depth descriptions and instructions in English is not easy for everyone here. I will be creating visual explanations and examples as often as possible. Everyone should feel welcome to copy into the comments anything I have written and ask for a clarification. We will work it out together. :-) Terry

René: "i see here a glimpse of the many possibilities to enhance the ones work and i am interested now. you woke the beast in me maybe" Oh, we will wake that beast, René .. we will wake him. ;-) And Gimp is just the friend to do it. You must get it! An amazing treasure among freely given programs. Now there are some folks who shun post work upon their renderings. This is not a nourishing stance for the developing artist. With rare exception, there are limits to how far 3D programs will take you towards the full realization of your creative intention. Squeezing a result from a 3D program which could be better performed in a graphics editor seldom satisfies and is a often a waste of precious time. Employ your 3D and editing programs as equal partners, whose interest is your "finished" image, and your work will improve dramatically. This will be an "adventure" and a fun one. Enjoy your Sunday, dear Brother! Terry
