Description

Thankyou all for your wishes and kindnesses. My heart sings with them. We Kiwis are a tough lot, and Canterbury and Christchurch and the surrounding districts will heal and repair. We are also a provident lot. We are all too familiar with earthquakes and the damage they do. It's just that this time it hit one of our cities. The Australian tectonic plate runs right through the country, so it's a bit unstable at the best of times. The Pacific Rim of Fire tends not to take prisoners. Actually there were two major quakes, separated by about two seconds. Severe aftershocks are still going on. In fact Christchurch was among the least likely to be hit. It's at the edge of a great plane, running towards the Southern Alps. But that's where this shallow quake hit. Tonight, gales are expected in the area, so things that weren't smashed in the quake are likely to be flying around in the gusts of up to 150k an hour. I used to get a bit turned off by the constant campaigns to raise awareness of dangers of earthquake and tsunami. Never ever again. Everybody knew exactly what to do, including the authorities and volunteers. Everything was in place within hours. Supplies were on hand, rescues underway (a lot of deep holes opened up in the ground, trapping people.). Everything just worked exactly as it had been planned. My internet went down for most of yesterday because the phones were overloaded, but that's nothing. The homeless are still homeless, and the city and countryside are still badly wounded, and there are years of work to do, and help needed for those who have nothing, but today we are proud Kiwis once again, and not just shocked Kiwis. This image is also in memory of the nine people who were killed when a light plane crashed at Fox Glacier. Five Kiwis, and four precious tourists--an Australian, a German, An Irishman, and an Englishman. I guess Nature has been out to play.

A beautiful composition of red blood and gold for missing your neighbors, but also for your people and your resistance. A butterfly of hope that you have created! Thank you for your explanations and for the courage of your people. Claude

Beautiful image!! Thank you for the update, the news yesterday talked a lot about the earthquake, but I find it far better to hear from someone who is actually there. Back more years than i care to admit when i was in the Canadian navy we sailed into Christchurch and Aukland during a trip to Australia/New Zealand. My memories especially of Chirstchurch are wonderful, we were greeted and shown such wonderful hospitality it was heart warming.

Thank you Merren for you information. Kiwi's, they are brave. So well you where prepared. I knew New Zealand is situated on a fault line of the earth. It is unfortunate, it gets no signal in advance before there is an earthquake. At the moment it's hard, even with storm and aftershocks. In thoughts and prayers I am moved by your people, and I am proud of them. Your picture does justice to what happens, dear.
