Description
The Great Buddha of Nara (Daibutsu) is the largest bronze statue in Japan at 52 feet (16 meters). Completed in 751 a.d. during the reign of Emperor Shomu, it took eight years to build and used most of the bronze available at that time.
In 1976 I visited Todaiji Temple to see the Great Buddha. I steadied my camera against one of the giant wooden pillars that hold up the roof so as to get a picture in the dim light. When I returned home I showed my slides to my parents and some of their friends. When I came to this picture my father said, "Just a minute, hold it there." He disappeared into a back bedroom and came back with the photo album he had made during his time in Japan. He also had a picture of the Daibutsu. It was the same picture. Thirty years later I had literally stood in my father's footsteps.

How wonderful! I don't have a picture from this angle. I like your (and your father's) images of the Great Buddha much better than mine. Beautiful low light capture of the statue and the architecture around him. Wonderful textures and composition! Great image, information, story, and title!

This has such a reverent feeling to it. The size, the pose...its really one you get that "hushed" emotion over. Great shot.

Goose bumps through my body as I read that!!! I love it when things like that happen. Great story and a truly wonderful view of the statue. The lighting is superb. That would make a great framed picture!
