Description

She sailed under the Patterson flag and was called the " Senator of Canada." She along with 2 other vessels were tied up in Toronto ready to be sent to the " scrappers yard " and cut up and made into whatever useful items society needs. But this scrap ship was set apart from others in as much that she would be leaving harbor under her own steam, an oddity itself. The man who would con her to her final destination was when she first put water under her keel a junior officer on her bridge. Now he was Captain and was taking the very vessel he had trained on to her last port to be tied up and scrapped. The table was set for the last meal and last voyage and the last meal. Sailors on the lake live well and eat well right down from the officers to the crew, all are fed well. This was no exception. The meal consisted of roast beef, mashed potatoes, 3 veggies, fresh baked bread, apple pudding, and raspberry crumble pie, coffee, tea or milk. Dinner would be served once they were free and clear of port and out in open water where the bridge crew could keep station while their ship mates ate, then they would be spelled off for their meal. She slipped her lines late Aug afternoon and once she cleared the gap she made a port turn into open water and the " old man " telegraphed the engine room for more steam allowing the old girl to once again lift her skirts as she had done in her younger days and steam hard and proud into the sunset....... thanks for the peek
