Description

About 2 years ago... maybe three, I bought a digital camera. The intent was: hmmm Rick, you have learned a bit about proportion, scale, light and contrast from you renders --- maybe you can transfer some of that knowledge to create some compelling (or at least visually interesting) photo's. And then I did..... nothing. I mean, I did not even take it out and take the obligatory family snap shots. Go figure. Last week I decided it was about time to give it a shot (excuse the pun). So I packed the car drove out of Los Angeles about 2 hours to a "Ghost Town" by the Name of Calico. Calico was a boom town in the 1880's. Mining and the promise of riches, of course, was the entire reason for the towns existence. That's what brought so many to California in the first place. In the case of Calico, much of the Silver played out by the 1890's. By 1900 the town was completely deserted. As I wondered around the undeniable beauty of the Desert town in the arid ever-beating, never ending 112 degree heat I could not help realize why so many stayed so briefly before moving west towards to more temperate valleys which now comprise most of greater Los Angeles. My next couple of uploads will be what I saw... the way I saw it. I must say I had fun. I may play with a little more photography. I hope you like my Calico series. Rick

It always strikes me as to what a bitch it must have been to be living in a place like Calico. 112 with no fans and houses with no insulation, let along air conditioning. Water scarce, no creek to jump into. Hell of an existance.

Great shot, Rick. Maybe it's a good thing to take some shots of what the world has to offer. Nice thing about digitals is you can snap away to your hearts content.

I have been there and it is a really neat place. When I lived out there we visted several ghost towns. Some had very little left as no one wished to keep the area. While others were restored to some extent and even had period actors. A terrifif shot. It would be great to see more !!!
