Description
Dear Emma,
Got to Calico this afternoon!
On gittin' there, the first thing needed done was to find a place to stay. Coulda camped near the edge of town and slept under the stars - agin. That is where most stayed who ain't had time to make a shack. I still had a few greenbacks and silver dollars I didn't loose to Clem in poker and figured I deserved a bit more. Having spent near three weeks straight riding that damn mule I bought back before the badlands had weighed on me heavy. Day in and day out mixing our sweat in the day, and body heat in the cold desert night, I wanted to have at least one night in a real bed 'fore startin' work in the mines. There be but one hotel in Calico so me choices were limited.
Going through the dusty streets it weren't hard to find. ain't that much here. Weren't the wurst flophouse I'd seen on the trip from Rochester, but weren't the best neither. Seemed clean 'nough - 'sidering the dust and sand that seems to coat everything in Calico. Recon it was a bit of an extravagance considering the price, but I forked over a sawbuck and greedily put the nine silver dollars and two bits change in our coin purse and called it a day. I am double counting all me change jest like we talked 'bout.
Tomorrow's 'portant and I need some decent rest 'fore I yak at the mine boss fer a job.
Wish me luck in the mine's. Hopefully I will be able to save 'nough to send fer you by Christmas.
Love as always,
Stu

Taken over 120 years later - labor day weekend 2010 with a Sony DSC-H7. Hope you don't mind the fictitious account of Stuart Riddleton's immigration to California - it just kinda popped into my head when reviewing the shots from the trip.
In any case, I hope you like the shot.

the story bit and the accent in the writing gives it the spice rick.must have been a real adventure.me i am more the comfortable kind of guy sitting in my vault and viewing the works instead of driving through the desert but my fantasies are all the way with you bro and i can hear the wind blowing through the ghost town and the heat knocking on the roofs..very inspiring for further reference to me.fav.
