Description

Here I'm in the entrance hall of a 18th century palace currently used by the Bishopry (the owner)as a kind of library for university students and by the University to rent rooms where to hold either lessons or conferences. I was there during a break in a conference, together with my faithful camera. I was looking with some puzzlement at the metal artwork on the right, which I nicknamed a giant umbrella stand in my mind, and considering the clash between its abstract modernity and the flagged floor that had seen rich coaches and some Bugatti cars in his halcyon days. I was also tempted by the reflections on the opposite bar window, where the reflection of the palace's stately door allowed me to see the people inside, and the rest of the glass reflected the people outside, in the street. When an old lady stopped before the door to read some notice, and the dog rushed inside, to go to what he thought of (I saw it just a few seconds later)as his HOME! I hope that the postwork succeeds in giving you the sensation of the noon glare outside and the half-light inside. Thank you for your kind comments.

Ah...sculpture! Are you sure it isn't Czech? Pipeworked umbrella stands are quite the rage in Prague, I hear...they use them as pots for abstract flowers. I love the richness of this image...it's full of texture, mood, implied mood...more texture, and just a rich sense of real, solid place! I love Europe for the dense manner in which reality seems to shape itself. Everything seems textured and covered in a fine patina of history and emotional significance. I have yet to visit Italy, but I'm sure that I will, despite my draw to the eastern fringes, where stuff is just...well...brooding. This is a marvelous shot, rich in every positive meaning of that word. I love it!
