Description

The fan has a long history in Japan. Carried by both women and men, it was customarily carried in the hand or tucked inside the obi (belt), especially in ceremonial dress. The gunbei-uchiwa was a solid, round fan used by officers to signal troops in battle. The gunsen, or folding war fan, was carried by samurai and used as a weapon of both attack and defense. Silk or paper, wooden or iron, the Japanese love their fans. You might say they are fans of fans.

"Three little maids from school are we Pert as a school-girl well can be Filled to the brim with girlish glee Three little maids from school" Okay granted, that's a Brit's take, but I always think of the use of fans in that song. I remember them also in Japanese Theatre like Kabuki. I love how you have captured them in all their rich variety and colors. Excellent shot!

The use of them here in England carried coded messages to potential suitors, how it was held/snapped shut etc. Most interesting objects.

Great picture, i love the colours and the repetition of shape. Referring to myrrhluz's comment, i was once in a production of Gilbert and Sullivans Mikado, the one she was referring to, i was part of the male chorus, and one of the scenes required syncronised fan opening, we had one elderly member of the chorus who stood right at the end of the line and was always about ten seconds late opening his, it was just over thirty years ago, but it still brings a smile to my face.
