Description
As mentioned in a previous post, Oni are creatures from Japanese folklore, variously translated as demons, devils, ogres or trolls.
Onigawara are a type of roof ornamentation found in Japanese architecture. They are generally roof tiles or statues depicting a Japanese ogre (oni). Japanese buildings sometimes include oni-faced roof tiles which are thought to ward off bad luck, much as gargoyles in Western tradition

This is majorly cool! It's funny that it is of something similar to a gargoyle as I am currently recovering from new damage to an old injury caused by an gargoyle. Okay, it was actually caused by a cocky 26 yr old jumping carelessly off of a church wall which was located on a slope. But if the gargoyle hadn't have been up there looking all cute, I would never have climbed up on the church wall in the first place. I love this image! Wonderful detail, textures, and POV! I love looking up at all the variety of shapes! Excellent capture of the wood grain, the carving at the end of the cylinder, and the Oni himself. All of your images of Japan are bringing memories back to me. Thank you!
