Description

Hands-on EVA. The opportunity to train for, and then fly into space is one of the most exciting occupations a person can have; it is also one of the most dangerous. One slip-up, one error in judgement can have fatal consequences for either the individual or an entire crew. Since becoming NASAs Head of Operations and Administration Robert Carter has known of the risks involved with space flight and has done everything possible to alleviate and control them as much as possible. The use of a multitude of mini-cameras mounted on nearly every piece of NASA hardware Carter has designed and had sent into orbit as part of his grand operational plan for taking America back into space has been aimed at reducing the amount of time that astronauts would be required to spend in spacesuits carrying out hazardous and dangerous spacewalks by allowing these operations to be carried out using the two robotic arms located within the cargo bay of the Orbital Shuttle fleet. But even with all these measures in place the situation sometimes calls for astronauts to venture out of the relative safety of a NASA spacecraft or the International Space Station and into the airless environment of space because "hands-on" is what is required to get the job done. Having rendezvoused and locked-on to the Fuel Pod Mount and the twelve generic fuel pods the mount is carrying, the Orbital Shuttle Endeavour has positioned the precious cargo of manoeuvring fuel to a location within three feet of the FS-1 Fuel Store Module now located on the newly enlarged American section of the International Space Station. Waiting in the airlock of the FS-1 Module for just this moment are the pressure suited Commander and Pilot of the Orbital Shuttle Atlantis, who have been selected by Robert Carter because of their extensive EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity or Spacewalk) training and previous experience to carry out the next phase of the mission. Exiting the airlock of the FS-1 Module the two astronauts make their way, using a combination of handholds and thruster equipped backpacks, to the first of the generic fuel pods which are currently securely latched in the Fuel Pod Mount being held in place by the crew of the Orbital Shuttle Endeavour using its two robotic arms. Working together the two astronauts will un-latch the generic fuel pod, slowly remove it from the Fuel Pod Mount and manoeuvre it into position and locate it into the first of the twelve docking stations which form part of the FS-1 Module. Working in blocks, each block removing and relocating six of the generic fuel pods it will take the two astronauts a total of two EVAs and eight hours to relocate and latch into place all twelve of the fuel pods into their new home. With all twelve of the generic fuel pods safely relocated, and the astronauts safely back inside the relative safety of the International Space Station, the crew of the Orbital Shuttle Endeavour will take their craft to the very edge of Earths atmosphere and release the now empty Fuel Pod Mount and stay on station just long enough to watch as Earths gravity takes hold of the mount and it begins its slow, tumbling decent to fiery oblivion.
