Description

Dear Emma, After a good nights sleep and a bath I feel almost human agin. Weren’t sure I’d be able to sleep. Seems Calico never goes all the way asleep. Not like Rochester at least. Sumpin always seems ta be going on. Different shifts of miners always seem to be working. There are access shafts all around the town where they pull up the ore more direct than going to the main entrance. So there be bangin’ and clangin’ at all hour. Think I may have ‘eard, and felt fer that matter, an ‘splosion or two from the depths. The clerk at the hotel says ya get used to it. Says if ya here long ‘nough ya don’t even hear it no more. Woke at dawn. Wondered the night before why there was a thick blanket covering me window. The sun here is like none you ‘ave ever seen. And fast. One moment the sky was black as Hades. The next, I felt I was bathing inside a blast furnace. The Blanket be for folk who want to sleep past 5 in the morning by keepin’ the light out. Went looking fer that Mr. Pinkerton the fellow we got the map from told us about. No one seemed to know where he is at. Got strange looks and even smirks when I asked too. Not sure what that is all ‘bout. Figure they are jeaolous if me knowing him. And ‘sidering he hires all the miners like that map seller told us, he be ‘portant here. Sure glad I got that introductory letter to guarantee me a job. There sure be a lot of men here looking fer work. Glad we got and edge. Was sure nice of that map fella ta write it fer me. And don’t ya fret, I ain’t mentioned the map to nobody. Not even Clem. Did see the main entrance to the mines. Very ‘pressive. They got the track jest like trains but smaller going in ‘n’ out of a bunch a holes. Some they pull almost strait up out of the earth ‘nd they use donkey’s and mule ta pull them by cable. Like I said very ‘pressive. Will look fer Mr. Pinkerton agin tomorrow ‘bout the job. If I don’t find him, ‘spose I will just go the the hiring corner by the saloon. Seems that be where they find new blood when they need it. Funds is gittin’ low so I guess I can do that till I find Pinkerton. ‘spose I should look fer a new place to sleep too. The Hotel is nice, but that 2 bits a night will go through our funds pretty quick. Time fer bed. I will be dreamin’ of ya! Tonight I will be leaving that blanket up on the window. Love as always, Stu August 30, 1889 - Calico, California ------------------------------------ Taken over 120 years later - labor day weekend 2010 with a Sony DSC-H7. Seems like Stu is having a problem finding the guy that can “guarantee” him a job. Maybe the guy who sold him the map wasn’t as upfront about that part as he was when he sold the map to the hidden gold vein to Stu and Emma back in Rochester NY. hmmmmm... In any case, I hope you like the shot. Rick
