Description

Please zoom in... Another WIP that you may enjoy watching. Most of you know me as a Vue artist, Modo modeler. My shills with Poser are limited so I wanted to try adding what little I know at this point into my work flow to create a portrait of a woman at an opened leaded window of a Flemish studio. This exercise started with me searching for hair that I actually liked.. finding something for Victoria 2, it was a bit old but after changing the hair color I applied it to the new Vanilla V4 model. I have to say that I am disappointed with what is available for those doing historical illustrations.... but then I understand the market considerations for doing winged amazon women with cleavage to get lost in... and hair to match. Anyway... Using a backplate with one of my interior studio renders, I created a leaded window pattern from one of my model as a lighting mask to create the shadows on her body. Seeing the interior now in the background, I'm able to adjust the lighting and color to match it. I then save the figure as a png and layer the two elements in Photoshop to make further adjustments in color contrast and added a lens blur to the background. This image is now imported into Vue as alpha plane. I now go back to Modo and model just the window elements I need for this scene and import it as an obj into Vue. I now position the window object in front, create mats and apply them for each mesh component... and create a second alpha plane of one of my exterior period renders and position it behind the camera to reflect into the windows. Now I'm at Stage one, can see what color, contrast adjustments I want to make as I work up a new glass material that will have bubbles in it and see what small details need to be added to the window structure.. to include taking it into ZBrush and making the leading more hand made. Wanting a low light, almost rainy feel, I have used an HDRI image for the atmosphere. Little things will make this, such as splits in the wood, the joints, hardware, I would like to add rain drops running down the glass.. all things to look into. If you think back at "The Race" wips images you will remember how much it changed to the final... I wonder where this will take me.... Cheers Don

Very good, but I do wonder how many would do the amount of work you do? I also agree with you about the historical aspect of the V4 model - M4 as well. There were more choices with V1. Thank you for your work, and your explanations, you aree certainly enspiring me.

Very nice you are a beacon, a light in the darkness. The workflow is as it is back and forth between Photoshop and Vue -the only imaginable serious one. The shadows on the woman are a little too pronounced, but it is a WIP so..anyway it is already a masterpiece, the angle, the pose, the attitude all signifies the true artist.

You have created a very striking woman, with an allure of mystery, and no 'cleavage to get lost in and hair to match'. :o)

The moment I saw this I said "Ah, he is attempting a Renaissance rendition," so clear to me was your styling of the Flemish masters. Then I read your words and indeed this is so. So for you, take that as a small measure of success. So much careful attention to color depth and shadows will surely pay off well and one can already see that in the window pattern cast on your subject. At this point I have not seen what is yet to come. One advantage of commenting late is that there is no waiting for me. Your hours and days of efforts are but seconds away for me. I must say I admire both your attention to such detail in your technique but also that you put in the time to so explicitly share them. Rare on both counts.
