Description
Captured 7/31/10, at the American Civil War Reenactment, held at the vast and beautiful El Dorado Park in beautiful Long Beach, California.
Don't bother zooming, it comes out the same size.
A wide disparity in age here.
The grizzled gentleman on top told me that the reason boys were used as drummers is because of their short stature, which made them poor targets. Drummers would be targeted by the opposition because they were the main form of communication among their own forces during the chaotic din of battle.
TTFN, thankx for clicking on, and for any and all complimentary comments and faves.

There are just so many comments that could be made about these, I'll restrict myself to, Is the 'old timer' saying "keep your head down, and you could grow up to be just like me"...great pictures, not the first subject that springs to mind when thinking of the Civil War.

It's sad to think of all the children who were killed in battles throughout history, but I imagine a lot of them were there of their own accord. These shots are wonderful historical reference, and very well done!

Great collage Harry! The drumming passed down from generation to generation!

That's such interesting info, Harry. I never knew that. I guess most of the people participating had some knowledge of the Civil War.

It's great to see the young lad taking up where his grandfather left off. Lovely captures and thank you for that information as I hadn't realised that that was why they were used.

so wonderful to see these brave people

This is so good and I found a super fact for you. Albert Woolson of Minnesota was a Union drummer boy who died in 1956, and the Civil War’s last authenticated survivor. Here's a neat fact sheet with more info: Click Here

Thank you for pointing me to this collage Harry! It is quite a contrast in age between the two and a very interesting fact regarding the drummers during the war! Fascinating and sad at the same time!

both are some really intersting characters and both are fine shots for sure!
