Description

Mass transportation first emerged in the city of Boston, in 1631, with a few private ferries. In 1793, the first stagecoaches were added and in the 1820s came the horse drawn omnibus (longer than a stagecoach and with benches facing the sides). The OMNI was a bus for all going everywhere. The stagecoaches went from town to town but the horse drawn OMNI, stopped in between. On March 26, 1856 the first horsecar started operating with horses pulling OMNIs on tracks. By the end of the 1800s, there were 8,000 horses involved. On January 1, 1889, the first electric streetcar went into service. By the turn of the century, the conversion to underground routes began, Bus lines were added and then commuter rail lines. Today, the Boston subway system spends as much time above ground as it does underground. The Hub's transit system is the oldest and fourth largest in the nation and has a history longer than that of American independence. This is two subway trains passing on the BLUE line. Info from the Boston MBTA web site. Photo taken this morning. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Great shot Dana. The bow equipment on the top which collects the current from the overhead wires is called a pantograph. These are made here in Chard, UK, in a factory where I used to work. It was my job to arrange the export to all quarters of the world.

Great shot! When I go to Boston using the "T" is the only way to go. Take the train from Attleboro to south station. No traffic, looking for a place to park is a job in itself, just make sure you take the right one, red line, blue line or green line or you can get lost.

Cool shot of the electric vehicles, Dana, and interesting narrative on Boston transportation history. Ferries, horses, stagecoaches, OMNIs, anything is better than the Los Angeles transportation system. Actually, that's not fair. The problem with the LA system is: too damn many vehicles of all description!

Great capture! Never been on the subway in Boston, been on the ones in New York City when I lived up there. Tallahassee has none, we just got buses and one train station. :)
