Description
Snoopy and Os Sphenoidale
I finally found it – the slide I made in 1982 to explain the structure of the sphenoid bone to my medical students. It’s shaped like a biplane, with yours truely in the role of “The Red Baron” and a poor beagle of international fame in the cockpit of the Sopwith Camel.
The parts of the bone are labeled and the corresponding parts on the plane have received the same labels to mark the similarities. Otherwise, this bone is extremely difficult to describe without something to reference it to.
The sphenoid bone is located in the center of the skull, the wings forming part of the eye sockets, and the “landing gear” forming the back part of the nasal cavity’s walls. The pituitary gland is located in the bone’s “cockpit” (sella turcica).
Enjoy!

Wow, quite a teaching tool. I'd probably remember it if it had ties to a biplane:) Very creative.

Why didn't we have teachers like you at school?..like Bill, I'd have remembered so much more with prompts like this.It is an above average teacher who goes to this sort of trouble to simplify the complexities. Thanks mate.
