Description

I've often seen how people behave more like lonely units than a mass. These two people were lonely readers in the flux of space-time, sharing the same place (Rome), time (noon), and interest (classic archaeology), and age but nothing else. They never looked at each other, never tried whether they might communicate in some lingua franca or pidgin English or watched the same old stones at the same time. They didn't look at me taking a shot of them, either. They made me think of the title on one of my favorite writers' novel, Islands in the Stream by Hemingway. I dedicate this image to Mark (anahata.c) whose comments are a feast to read. He's recovering from serious illness and gracing us with his profound insights again. Thanks for your kind comments.

Yikes! I'm late to this---mea culpa! I'm still not "back" yet, and I didn't get your message till tonight! Thank you, thank you for thinking of me with this image! The image is wonderful. The trees & the orange-ish tone to them, their almost autumnal presence, are wonderful counterpoint to this collection of antiquities just sitting around this park or open yard, etc; the hanging boughs soften everything--including the stone--and make the scene feel "caressed"; the beautiful yellow & amber tones in the leaves along with the beautiful tones in the stones give the shot a quiet 'fire' (even in front, you got this autumnal glow in the stones' shadows); and the light just spills along the ground like it was flowing out to greet us: A very affirming, splendid photo, which makes one feel that those readers are 'blessed' in this little enclave: The readers seem wholly unaware of everything, yet your scene is cradling them in beautiful surroundings, and the sculptures of antiquity are quietly watching them without intruding a bit. Like, whatever the readers are reading is 'protected' by the statues, trees & stones. (The scene feels 'protective' to me.) Splendid. And I realized, when seeing this, that it has one of your traits as an artist & presenter: Always presenting the juxtapositions of life, which surround us but which we only occasionally notice: It's your natural eye for the melding--even collisions--of history, culture, artifacts, etc, etc, inexorably brought together into one space for one moment, as if it all came together for your camera & eye. Wonderful image and delineation of your theme (you're doing a great job with this theme, as you have with all your others). Thank you for dedicating it to me--it helps me get past this health stuff! I'm still not back, but I hope to be soon; seeing this sure moves things along more quickly: Grazie! If only those readers knew how kind their surroundings were...maybe they'd look up a little more...
