Description

4"22 The On Going Conclusion of A Tribute to John Cage John Milton Cage Jr. (1912-1992) was an American composer, philosopher, poet, music theorist, artist, printmaker, and amateur mycologist and mushroom collector. A pioneer of chance music, electronic music and non-standard use of musical instruments, Cage was one of the leading figures of the post-war avant-garde movement. Cage is perhaps best known for his 1952 composition 4"33, the three movements of which are performed without a single note being played. The content of the composition is meant to be perceived as the sounds of the environment that the listeners hear while it is performed, rather than merely as four minutes and thirty three seconds of silence, and the piece became one of the most controversial compositions of the twentieth century. THE EXPLINATION: This was an expeirment in the same vane as 4"33 but in conceptal art insted of music. With the way the REALITY program computes a render in a random pattern as opposed to ordered steps or blocks at a time. I am able to STOP and SAVE the results and then I could continue the rendering indefinately. The first imge was rendered for 4 minutes and 22 seconds hence the title 4"22 The second image was 24 minutes and 20 seconds The third image was rendered for 42 minutes and 20 seconds The fourth and final for now was rendrered at 4 hours 22 minutes and zero seconds The fifth had (if) made it would be rendering for 4 days 22 hours and 4 minutes and 22 seconds. The sixth would render would go for 4 weeks, 2 days, 20 hour,s 4 minutes and 22 seconds. and so on and so on to infinity months years decades .....but I dont think these later renders will happen in my lifetime If any one cares to take up the torch you are more than welcomed! The image itself is merely a geometrical absrtact of 4"22 using cubes and sphere set on a plane. Several of the atributes of the image were tweaked within the bounds of 422 with some artitsic contraints. For example the X,Y, and Z Rotation of the camera all all set to 4.22. The smaller cubes are 42% smaller than the large cube the sphere is 42 inches had 42 segments and 42 sides. The opacity of the cubes and sphere were all set at 42%. The focal length of the camera was set at 42mm and some other things I don't remember were also adjusted. The image that turned out was a complete suprise to me. I had used the Light Dome Pro II and for some reason the texture on the sky dome did not read correctly into the REALITY program and the program rendered it very strangely as you can tell. But I would like to think if John Cage were alive he would be pleased with unexpected results and appreciate it that much more I thank everyone who followed this and hope you were not disapointed in the end results. John Cage is not for everyone but I admire his willingness to ask is it art? it it music if no one plays? is it art by the artist or not if the computer generates the sound or image? Have a great Weekend. Thanks for all the comments and ecourgement and favs as of late sorry i can't thank everyone individually but please know I do appreciate your suppor PS I am trying to see what a longer render would look like. So far I'm up to 24 hours as of 25th Sept 1220am will post the results when it's rendered for 118hours 2minutes 22seconds or I'm forced to shut down the computer.... UPDATE:* A fifth was made Rendered at 42 Hours 24 Minutes and 22 Seconds (see next upload) Chris
