Description

Ever since the Moon had been dragged closer to the Earth by a passing Protoplanet, the population of the Earth had been dropping. Scientists had determined that in another 1000 years the Earth would become uninhabitable. The tides had risen from the nearness of the moon and, along with the ocean levels rising from the polar caps melting completely, the coastline was almost 100 miles inland from the levels of 2000 A.D. The air pressure had also risen 3 lbs. per square inch so it left only the healthiest people alive. Wilhemina certainly looked healthy. She came out onto the roof of her building, (complex B3), at night when the temperatures had dropped to relax and enjoy the night air. Most people stayed inside of their buildings, preferring not to venture into the atmosphere at all. Even as much as Wilhemina liked to escape the hustle and bustle of the interior she still wore her pressure suit to compensate for some of the excess heaviness of the air. Tonight was especially beautiful because it was one of the few times of the year when the sky was not full of the fog and clouds of a “normal” day. She would still have to take off the Atmo-suit before she went back inside.. Couldn’t track all that condensation back onto the floors of her building. The alarm would go off it she allowed very much moisture in. It was the reason for the air locks. She could be fined a nice part of her monthly credits to pay for scrubbing and redrying the H2O filters and her outdoor permit would be suspended for almost a year because of it. She had always been careful of the building protocols. Her parents had worked in B3’s administrative orderlies, whose job had been to oversee just this type of situation. Her Mother had told her the stories that her Grandmother had made her study constantly about the before times. It was hard for her to believe how small she had been told that the Moon had been by her parents. Though they had never seen the skies of those long past times they had shown her pictures of a tiny moon over a place that had been called New York City. This place had not existed for over one hundred years, though they claimed that 65 miles offshore you could, at the lowest tides, see the very tops of the tallest buildings. Every once in a while, something would detach itself from some structure deep underwater and float to the surface. The Universities paid very well for any article from that time. It always made it to the online news. It was a reason that Wilhemina had studied Pre-disaster Archeology and filled most of her days. It was also the reason she had been given an outside pass. It was the main reason she was so careful when coming up to the rooftop. If she were to cause a problem by being up on the roof and not following protocols, if she were to lose her permit to leave the interior, her studies would be over as well as her night time excursions up here. She would then be moved to complex G or below. None of these building units had outside access locks. J or below didn’t even have windows to look out of.

Sensational scene and intriguing storyline! Sounds like she has roof access to herself. Could she be secretly building an exploration vehicle to further her research. :)

Superb story Gene wonderful indeed. Love the image also, that rocks.. The big moon in the background looks amazing but scary imagining what it would do to the earth being that close...
