Description

On 27 March 1986, an explosion rocked the Russell Street Police Headquarters and shattered glass in buildings a block away. One person died and 21 were injured in what was described as a revenge attack on Melbourne police. While terrorism has been of international significance since the events of 9/11, in 1986, Australians were unfamiliar with the concept of explosions or terrorist attacks on their own soil. At 1.00pm in downtown Melbourne, Australia had a shock awakening. The first explosion came from a parked car, which had been loaded with 50 to 60 sticks of gelignite...enough to wipe out all the windows in the front of the building and set off a series of petrol tank explosions in nearby cars. The blast could be heard throughout the city and the smoke was seen by people several blocks away. Constable Angela Taylor was crossing the street to get lunch when a nearby car exploded, sending a huge fireball toward her. She survived the blast but her burns were extensive and she died 24 days later. She was the first Australian policewoman to be killed in the line of duty. 19-year-old Constable Carl Donadio was also crossing Russell Street to buy lunch. He was on the other side of the exploding vehicle, which sent a hail of shrapnel in his direction. He was thrown 15 metres across the road by the force of the explosion. He was severely injured but survived and remained in the police force for another 15 years. The explosion was a revenge attack' on the police force by two career criminals who were eventually caught and tried for the offense. Stanley Taylor and Craig Minogue were convicted of the murder of Angela Taylor and related crimes, and sentenced to life imprisonment. The building has been empty of police for many years, as they moved away to more modern premises. Best viewed full size! UPDATE! Disturbingly, one of the killers, Craig Minogue even has the nerve to run his own website......still pushing his side of every story. I can't believe he is even permitted to, but these days even scumbag killers have rights........ LINK

they allowed those two to live? Why? they should have experienced the same thing as Constable Angela Taylor felt when she was caught in the blast.

Really lovely building, such a shame it's got such a sad history behind it. And mores the pitty that the guys that did it got away with it...much less running a WEB SITE trying to exonerate them of their guilt! Bah!

This world has got serious issues and a lot of sick people who need to be dealt with. I couldn't help but think of the Oklahoma City bombing several years ago.

Bombing has to be the most sickening and indiscriminate crime of all and an insult to humanity

A brilliant photo, and a sad story. I don't think of Australia as a Politically Correct environment, weird.

A mighty fine photo and great tribute to the Police .. I can believe you Andrew about the website.. if it happened here, he would out already and claiming compensation for something like pillow not soft enough! And the really scary thing is... because of something called' The Human Rights Act', we signed in the EU, he would it! Should be hung and save so much money.. Rob

There are no victim's rights in the world these days, and especially not here in the U.S. Victim's usually get blamed for being in the way of the wrath of the criminal. This is a wonderful building in the architecture. I hope some day someone can salvage it, and remodel it back to the former glory, if nothing else but to prove that criminal deeds are never permanent.
