Description

Scand from a old holiday snap this is the Arch of Constantine in Rome, it is a triumphal arch situated between the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill. It was erected to commemorate Constantine 1's victory over Maxentius at the battle of Milvian Bridge on October 28, 312. Dedicated in 315, it is the latest of the existing triumphal arches in Rome, from which it differs by spolia, the extensive re-use of parts of earlier buildings.

Nice shot ... it's some years old though ... the hole on the right was dug by my wife, to find the Meta Sudans fountain destroyed by the fire of 64 AD, 6 meters down. The hole has been filled in since, and the excavations are still going on on the hillside of the Palatine, those trees on the right have been chopped down ...

Wonderful to see something so old and of ancient history. It reminds me of Arc de Triomphe in Paris for Napoleon. We did see that one in 2001.
