Description
Across the Shinkyo Bridge is the mausoleum of the shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa. Nikkō Tōshō-gū is a Shinto shrine built in 1617 and it is here that his remains are entombed.
During the Tokugawa rule twice yearly processions from Edo (Tokyo) to the Nikkō Tōshō-gū were carried out. The shrine's annual spring and autumn festivals reenact these occasions, and are known as "processions of a thousand warriors."

Those lanterns look great in such a dark colour. They make the small pale concrete copies one can purchase in garden centres look very weedy.
