Description
There are a number of sacred buildings in the area of Nikko but the stable of the shrine's sacred horses bears one of the most famous carvings in the world.
The three wise monkeys, or sanzaru, a traditional symbol in Chinese and Japanese culture, embody the principle to "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". The three monkeys are Mizaru, covering his eyes, who sees no evil; Kikazaru, covering his ears, who hears no evil; and Iwazaru, covering his mouth, who speaks no evil. Sometimes there is a fourth monkey depicted with the three others; the last one, Shizaru, symbolizes the principle of "do no evil". He may be shown covering his abdomen or genital area, or crossing his arms.
After my visit to Nikko it was time to go home.

These monkeys were very important in my house when I was young. We had a small figurine of them and I was directed to look at them often as a lesson in life. Great capture.
