Description

I had a once in a lifetime day watching wildlife yesterday. I saw a pair of wild Otters playing in the water. They rolled and giggled in the sunshine splashing totally happy as only Otters can. Within an hour we watched an Osprey dive and catch a fish! All aided by binoculars, too far away for a photograph. I then spotted the biggest mushroom I have ever seen. This monster had a stem as thick as my forearm. Size is hard to get over an a photograph. It did look like I could sit on it! The prolonged heavy rain has given us a feast of fungi this year. I wish that I had a chance to shoot the events of the day with my camera. That didn't happen but it was a day I will always remember at my local lincolnshire reserve. The humble Messinghan Sand Quarry gave us a grand day out! The only prize to take home a picture of a mushroom and a big smile!

WOT A WOPPER! So glad you had such a wonderful day, Kevin. If this is the sort of Bolete that makes a good eat you could have invited the road round for supper! How marvellous about the otters and the osprey! I had a sparrowhawk at the feeders and he missed all the Long-tailed tits!

What an awesome giant mushroom. :) Too bad you could not take photos of the wild otters and the osprey, but at least you keep the memories. :)

A day like that you can never forget. Thanks Kevin for telling us in such a descriptive way. Wish we could have been there too. As for the mushroom - I have never in all my life seen one that huge. It is hard to imagine - even with the zoom! Puffballs yes, mushrooms no! Yes, it's certainly been a great year for fungi. All the family coming for breakfast?

This mushroom reminds me of a loaf of bread, it has that lovely baked texture to the cap! Sounds like a great day. Yesterday I was stuck in traffic on one of the bridges coming back home from Seattle, and as I got to the source of it I realized it was a bald eagle sitting on a lamp standard on the side of the bridge, just grinning and watching the cars slow down to stare at him. He seemed quite proud of himself! Unfortunately there was no place to stop and take pictures (isn't that the way of it!!!) and stopping in traffic would only get me a citation from the police.
