Description
Bridge number 4 Hogback Covered Bridge
This bridge doesn't have the storied past or at least that I could find as some of the others. It hasn't been moved not even once; it has stood in its present location for 126 years. I stood out side this bridge and inside trying to look at ever inch, I didn't want to miss anything. As I do with the old houses and barns that I shot, I try to imagine its history.
I look at the carvings on the walls and start to wonder about the people all the way back to 1884. No way to know which carvings are a 126 years old or 100 or 75 years old but to think that I'm looking at something that has stood the test of time with just a little TLC along the way. I am thankful for the opportunity to visit this wonderful old bridge.
Standing there trying to hear the voices of years ago imagining the horse and buggies clomping and clanking across the floor beams the old cars and trucks heading for Winterset or back home and suddenly I'm consumed with the history and the fact that 126 years of life has past through and across this bridge. Now, I'm apart of its history and it's apart of me.
Hogback Covered Bridge was built in 1884, it is 97 feet long, and is in its original location in a valley north of Winterset Iowa. It was in use up until the mid 1990s, when a modern bridge bypassed it. Hogback Covered Bridge gets its name from the limestone ridge which forms the west end of the valley. It was renovated in 1992 at a cost of $118,810.

Lots of depth and super stark contrast in this cool image, and what a colorful rustic name for this venerable bridge. Thanks for the history on the structure.
