Description
Bridge number 5 Holliwell Covered Bridge
This is one of the bridges that I looked forward to seeing the most and the second one I found on my way into Winterset. I don’t know if it sounds strange or not but the closer I got the more the excitement grew after all I had drove over 700 miles just to shot these bridges. Pulling up to the south end of the bridge my excitement faded just a bit, it was pretty grown up around the entrance and on the sides making it a little challenging to photography.
Walked through the bridge I found they had mowed the grass on the north end, but the light was no good, I took several shots and decided to come back that evening In hope of better light. I got back about 7 pm and the light was much better. I chose this Point of view so you could see the way the bridge was constructed on the inside.
Again, on the north end I shot until almost dark. If you’ve seen the movie Bridges of Madison County, this is the bridge the romance between Francesca Johnson (Meryl Streep) and Richard Kincaid (Clint Eastwood)a photographer began.
Finally to spend sometime inside to bridge to again consume just a little of the history of the past 130 years. I had spent all my time alone until I came back to the Holliwell Bridge a local yellow cat not to happy about me being there but willing too tolerate me not wanting to give up his shelter for the night I was glad to have the company; After a short time I bid him good night and headed for the motel.
Built in 1880 by Benton Jones, it is the longest covered bridge, measuring 122 feet. It remains in its original site over the Middle River southeast of Winterset. Holliwell was renovated in 1995 at a cost of $225,000. It is featured in The Bridges of Madison County movie.
Thanks for stopping by to visit the bridge and for any comments you care to leave. And for the favs on my last post, wishing each of you a wonderful weekend!

Most interesting site you have captured, and so well! Great colours and lighting, and a fascinating text to accompany it. Never even heard of it, and a most interesting tidbit about the renovation cost... wow! That is something else!
