Description

It started out in late 1947 as a drawing on the table of the carpenters shop in the railroad. It was to be a signal man's shanty to be place at a street crossing in the inner city, part of the belt line that ran around the city.. It was built and transported to the local and placed, doing the duty it was set out to do, have the signal man come out when a train was coming stop traffic and let it proceed safely for all concerned. It performed its function well for a number of years until technology reared its ugly head replacing it with red flashing lights and the signalman was out of a job. Building 101 was reborn sometime later when it was placed in the north end of the city deep in the industrial section, placed off the industrial line to a switch that lead to a siding that was used several times a day 7 days a week. Building 101 now became the " switch mans shanty " and did its duty as such. Its not hard to imagine perhaps on a cold winters night the engine crew shunting the cars onto the siding to be loaded, perhaps taking a few minutes over a cup of jo in the shanty, talking about last nights hockey game, or the price of gas, or maybe politics, any number of topics. It sat there year in and year out doing the duty it was made for time passing slowly down there. The came again change, the business that required so many cars dropped during the course of the day phased out, the product it made and sold was done so elsewhere, cheaper. The switch mans job was rendered null & void & building 101 closed up and locked. Time....took its toll on the building, vandals broke in and ransacked it, smashed the windows and left the door open leaving it to the elements. It sat for years this way, forgotten, neglected, the grounds around it becoming over grown with weeds and errant shrubs & trees. The rain, snow came in through the broken window and door creating more havoc on 101. Then yet again building 101 had a reprieve so to speak. It sits there still the same place, not moved, the shrubs and small trees, now grown into big ones, the grass longer now now all but hide it from anyone's view. For the new tenants who now have taken up residence there its a perfect match, well hidden, forgotten, every drug addict & crack heads dream, a free place to do as they do unhindered, unnoticed as the world passes them by......such is the life of building 101...............thanks for the peek

This would be a great addition to a railroad museum. Great history and the story is not done yet... Fabulous shot.
