a photojournalistic shot (you do them on & off), and it contains more lessons for me...First you do monotone masterfully, so everytime I see one of yours I look as closely as I can. This one feels like it has bleached whites, which make your often-rich grays that much richer. (The saturated white allows all gray tones to feel deeper by contrast.) Your details---weeds on the ground, decay in the stone/plaster, the plant behind the man's left/our right, etc etc---are given to us with your usual clarity; and your grays are quite high-key (ie, bright and luminous). The light & shade on the man are beautiful. And the linear detail---from the slope of the right wall to the piers and pipes and even that wonderful graffiti on the left---are all masterfully seen by you, making a very full portrait of the man & of his whole surroundings. The door is open, and perhaps that's a man behind it smoking or looking out...hard to say. But as with other of your works, this poses human questions whose non-existent answers are part of the piece, ie they become one of the 'characters' in your art. And the high-bleached whites on the left give a 'frame' to the piece, as does the crawling plant beneath it...So this becomes a wonderful abstract as well as a fine portrait of a human being. I guess I'm just gonna have to say it again: Presence, directness, mystery, clarity and visual music---that's what this piece has.
