Description
Captured 10/15/10, in the Spider Pavilion on the beautiful grounds of the beautiful Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History in Los Angeles.
Don't bother zooming, it comes out the same size.
Original on top.
Sorry to temporarily tear you away from my series on the American Civil War, but I drove up to the museum yesterday to snap some shots of the arachnids on display and thought I'd pop some in at this time. I took 118 pics while at the Pavilion, several of which I've trashed already, under very lousy leaden sky conditions. My flash wasn't responding at the time so I had to shoot in existing light thru a long 28-200mm lens. Hence, I'm spending long hours postworking the fotos to death. If it wasn't for Photoshop, this would be a no show.
Anyway, it was interesting and fun, despite the screeching of undisciplined urchins running amok and acting like they had just discovered a gold mine each time they spotted a spider. Although there were numerous spiders about, I was disappointed at the lack of variety in the display. Maybe four or five at the most. The arachnids had woven their webs among the inside trees and lantana bushes, just waiting for their unsuspecting prey. As for their particular identities, I'll have to leave that to such astute nature mavens as durleybeachbum and others. I was hoping for at least some elegant orb weavers and half-inch diameter web threads.
Whereas Andrea can step out at any time into her back yard, and/or nearby copse, forests, heath and moors, for her fantastic spider and insect captures, I had to drive out 22 miles to a controlled and somewhat crowded environment, then shell out eight bucks for parking and two for admission, just to get in touch with this facet of nature.
Sayonara, thankx for the visit, and for any and all favorable comments and favs.

Harry, I just LOVE the top pic in particular, and what a journey you have to make to get it! Have you looked under your sink, or behind the rubbish bins? I can't believe you have no spiders nearer..what about where you go to photograph the roses? In my county we have more to a square yard than anywhere else in the UK, but you must have at least ONE!

Sorry, Andrea, I've looked and looked, and the closest thing we have to spiders around here is an occasional daddy-long-legs, and they aren't even considered true arachnids.

I like the top one, super interesting shots Harry. Amazing how these little buggers can create such totally cool looking webs, all the same yet so very different...well captured my friend. Hope your doing fine this evening. :-)

Great collage Harry. Normaly I am not fancy the spider but this is good. Like the 3rd for the strong colors.

Spiders and webs are most interesting, you did a superb job showcasing this one.

What an excellent shot! Too bad you had to endure those conditions to get it; I have so many on and around the house right now it's difficult NOT to see them, we're having a bumper crop of spiders this year! The variations are nice too, but my favourite is the original.

You got a Spider Pavilion! I hate them, but find them fascinating... This is cool.. Y did once hold a tarantula though.. It was actually like a mouse or hamster.. Felt like it when I stroked it as well.. Did not expect it. Great shots Harry.. Rob

Fancy having to go so far to see a spider, they are not my favourite critters at all as I'm a bit afraid of them especially the big ones, as they move so fast and looks so weird. We have a lot here too and I don't mind them so long as they stay outside. This is an excellent capture of this quite bright spider and I like your photoshopping of it too, but sorry I can't put it into my favs, though it does deserve to be there.
