Description

I recently vistited the castle of Hoensbroek (NL)in the province of Limburg. This Castle of Hoensbroek is one of the largest castles in the Netherlands. It is quite impressive and considered 'The most royal castle between the rivers Rhine and Maas'. The oldest part of the castle, especially the high round tower, is dating from around 1360. Earlier, in the 13th century, there was a fortified house at this place. Because of its strategic location for the province of Brabant to the important trade routes to Maastricht, Aachen and Cologne, the castle was built in successive stages to the largest castle between the Maas and Rhine. It contains not less than 67 rooms and spaces. Over the centuries the castle was rebuilt and enlarged. The various architectural styles from different centuries (14th, 17th and 18th) are clearly distinguishable. The complex is surrounded by a moat and has four wings around a rectangular courtyard. The main building is on a bridge. It has two equal, fairly stocky, square towers with onion strikers on both sides of the entrance, and two higher and heavier, semi-detached corner towers of uneven shape at the back. The picture shows the castle from the front.
