Description
Finally the car is packed and I am off on my five-week photo safari. It's a Sunday and I make good time traveling North on the 405 freeway. As I approach the pass through the hills that will take me on to Sacramento, my destination for the first day, I encounter a massive traffic backup. As if to let me know I will be missed Los Angeles has arranged a roadside brush fire for me. I am suitably touched. Finally free I continue North.
Just off Exit 263 of Highway I-5 lies the town of Buttonwillow. With a population of just under 1,300 Buttonwillow is notable for three things. It is the center of population of California. This means that half of all the people in California live south of the town and half live north of the town. It is also the location to one of California's three toxic waste dumps: the Lokern Facility. Finally, it is host to an Indian restaurant, A Taste of India. An Indian restaurant in a small town at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley. It never ceases to amaze me where some people end up.
I made Sacramento by three o'clock and immediately headed for Old Town and the Sacramento River. I took a walk on the Tower Bridge, which spans the river. The center span of this bridge moves straight up and down like an elevator to let ships pass. Our resident Sacramento Rendo member PJ (Mrs. Lubner) has another view here:
I've lived all but five of my years in California and this was my first visit to the state capital.
