Description
More from the tallgrass prairie. It took a while for me to get tuned in to the place ... it's so different from the Pacific Northwest ... but the prairie has a beauty and a magic all its own.
Standing in grass up to my eyeballs, watching it blow in the wind, seeing the view through seedheads and golden stems, gave me a sense of what people love about that area.
Today we drove through part of Kansas, through western Nebraska, and into Wyoming. I always thought I'd hate the midwest, but I stayed awake all day, not wanting to miss a minute of the view.
I'm not ready to move away from the PNW, but I really am enjoying this trip!

Low f-stop gives the depth of field
Although there's a bunch of postwork here, it wasn't cropped. I was happy with the composition straight out of the camera.

I love this picture. I spent 18 months in Kansas but didn't see anything like this. I, too, prefer the Pacific NW.

I've lived in Kansas for over thirty years and finally got to see some of the 4% of remaining unplowed great plains...thanks for including this on our itinerary:* The light and 'tallness' of the grass come through beautifully.

I'm glad you fell in love with prairie grass...it covered a massive part of the country before the Europeans came. And it's a cornucopia of herbs & seeds & flowers, many of which held medicinal substances for the peoples who lived here. And as you saw, it's primal---nothing like the "grass" we see on lawns today. And it's high---you saw how huge it is, how you literally push your way through prairie fields. And the sound is incomparable---from the wind, from your footsteps, from the stalks bending as you push them aside---and the smells...And the growths can vary from area to area, different wildflowers, different leaves, etc. There is something spiritual in its sameness & in the daunting height of the place... Your shot gives us depth but also the golden glow: At certain times of day the prairie can seem like an endless fire. And you gave us a closeup of one of its prickly, primal stalks. Fine work on the separation of stalk from the "sea" in back. Glad you discovered its powers, and I was thrilled when you posted 2 shots of it. Fine work Tara, and while I welcome you back home, I'm also glad you made the journey. I mean, you both made a journey to find each other: How fitting that you should journey the distance between your original homes, after you got married. You actually touched the earth that once sat 'between' you. That's mythic! And in the process, you saw these amazing endless fields...something is "completed" in that. Not because "I" come from the midwest, but because Bill did, and you both touched this great expanse together.
