Description
In my last post of my trip to New York City, last April, we were flying through turbulence and endless seas of clouds. When the clouds opened, we were on the East Coast. This is Delaware and the Delaware Bay. The flight line is on Dover Air Force Base.
Dover Air Force Base is located southeast of the city of Dover, Delaware. It was originally a municipal airport, that the United States Army Air Corps assumed jurisdiction for in March of 1941. After the close of the 2nd World War, it was placed on inactive status, until it was reactivated in 1950 due to the Korean War. It is home to the largest military mortuary in the Department of the Defense. This mortuary was used in 1978 for the victims of the Jonestown mass murder/suicide, 1986 for the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger, in 2003 for the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia, and for military personnel killed in the 9/11 attacks. Dover Air Force Base is the home of the Air Mobility Command museum, dedicated to military airlift and air refueling aircraft and the people who maintain them. Volunteers, many of them retired pilots, conduct tours of fully restored cargo and tanker aircraft. (information of Dover Air Force Base is from Wikipedia)

Fantastic capture here Lucinda, as only you can do. Love the thought of Delaware appearing when then clouds opened as it gave this beautiful pic even more meaning. It must be said this is an epic view and as always you were thoughtful enough to provide us with a rich and detailed history. I had no idea so many sad and powerful moments were a part of it's history and now you have me wanting to take one of the tours you mentioned.

Stunning would be too weak an adjective to be used in describing this awesome aerial capture of the Dover AFB/Mortuary, Lucinda! Interesting info, also. Maybe it's my goofy browser, but the photo looks abstractly postworked to my ancient eyes.
