Description
A dragonfly resting on a large butterbur leaf...
- From personal experience I know that it is extremely difficult to catch dragonflies on photos, they are restless and very quick. Virtual ones are easier to control :)
Mainly a technical exercise with iridescent highlight (the dragonfly's wings). The effect is probably a bit overdone to be strictly realistic, but I like it this way :)
The leaves on the butterburs are modeled as terrains in Vue. Dragonfly from Content Paradise.
Vue 8.4 render, incl. the DOF. Levels correction, framing & signature with Photoshop.

The detail in the leaves is amazing. The iredescence is believeable at the right lighting angle. Dof makes it look photorealistic. The only things that might improve photorealism is a translucence to the leaves with patterns on the back slightly visible and maybe brighter specularity. Perfect lighting is so hard. Detail is excellent though.

i thought this was a photo before i remembered whose gallery i was visiting. the iridescence on the wings is just incredible. the only puzzling aspect to me is those blotches on (through?) the leaves on the lower left. incredible, incredible work.
