Description
Described in 1883 as "the best improved farm in Chase county," [Kansas] the Spring Hill Farm and Stock Ranch became a showpiece for cattleman Stephen F. Jones and his wife Louisa. In 1878 they came to Kansas from Colorado wishing to graze cattle on the "fine prairie grasses" of the Flint Hills and then ship them by rail to market in Kansas City.
BARN: This massive 60 x 110 foot limestone barn was used to house animals, shelter equipment, and store the hay and grain that fed the livestock during the winter months. In 1885, Jones' livestock numbered 200 swine, 30 horses, 8 milk cows, 4 mules and hundreds of cattle foraging on the ranch's prairie grasses. The barn was built into the side of a hill for natural insulation and access.

full-size is a MUST on this, as your detail and radiance jumps out at us. The radiance of the gravel & the reflected light on the fence is scintillating. And the highlight on the silo & the wall between fence & house (and a little on a roof near that) are small but beautiful captures. And the opening sweep---as this thing comes tumbling down at us---is beautiful, even breathtaking. As is the stark contrast of the darkened brick of the house and the deep blue sky. Really a stunning shot of a very midwestern sight, and full size this piece just runs into ya...Beautiful, Bill. Really fine work.
