Description

There will be lots of little Masked bandits out tonight Up to tricks And looking for treats. Credits: Another in my 'Spirit Of The Wild' series paying tribute to those little masked raccoons who are always up to mischief. We have 3 that visit us nightly. Created in Photoshop CS using photos, painting techniques, and plant brushes by mystikel. Special thanks to Iloina Krijgsman for the use of her darling raccoon photos. Wonderful work :) I have always been fond of raccoons. Where I grew up they were considered pests, but I welcomed them.

I don't like them in my backyard but you made them so beautiful and magical. Wonderful, light, colours, atmosphere and composition.

a really nice addition to the halloween collection, because you paid tribute through an animal rather than to the usual images---which are fine, but since it's a mid-season holiday (cross-quarter), and celebrates the very center of autumn (in the n. hemisphere), it's always nice to see nature images alongside the spirits & goblins that inhabit so much of the holiday's imagery. You did wonderful work with the raccoons, somehow softening them while at the same time highlighting their contrasts, making them shine like little bundles of light in the night. Your choice of near b&w really helps in that. And I don't know if the original photographs were all facing this way---it seems like you worked them up to face that way, and it's wonderful because they're all looking just out of frame, bringing us out of frame & reminding us that the whole world is out there, for a raccoon, that they're not just occupying the small space we see them in when they're near our garbage or door, etc. A nice swath of brown in the left bottom raccoon, and your treatment of grasses (from brush or your own painting or both) is luminous, with the same highlighting & hues you use in the raccoons it seems, and there are sections where they fade into a kind of sea-like blur---an opulent night touch that you use so expressively in other of your works. (Brings Mina to mind too...there were/are a handful of artists on RR who used blurs & blends in a wholly mystical way. You're one of the masters of that.) The white tree on the left is wonderful, and the rest...well, one of your mystical skies with billowy clouds, moon & stars. I really appreciate this for halloween (samhain, cross-quarter, etc): It puts nature back into the day, along with the coming dark; and it's luminous and, like so much of your work, both loving & gentle. Speaking of autumn, I hope your thanksgiving was fine as well!
