Description

Not far from Stourhead, in the woods surrounding it. A folly supposedly built on the site of Egberts Stone, where it is believed that Alfred the Great, king of Wessex rallied his Saxon troops in May 878 before the important battle of Ethandun where the Viking army was defeated. It is estimated that 1.2 million bricks were used in its construction and the bricklayers used no type of scaffolding instead they sat on the rising walls as they were built.

I remember the surprise on arriving after walking from the park. A moody shot and a great sky.
