Description

Hi friends, greetings from a Berlin night again! This here is the Kaiser-Wilhelm-GedÃ¤chtniskirche, BerlinÂ´s most famous church and the center of the old West-Berlin. Before the wall felt, this was the most known symbol of Berlin worldwide. The church was built in neoromanic style in 1891-1895 as a memorial church for emperor Wilhelm I. of Preussen. At the 23th November 1943 the church was damaged by bombs and roof and tower burned down and collapsed and felt into the choir. Between 1943 and 1956 the church was a complete ruin. With the beginning of 1956 the church was reconstructed by architect Eiermann in a complete new architectural style. He planned an octogon for the church and a separate new tower with an octogon, too. The old tower was reconstructed into its recent shape as a symbol against war and destruction. Today the old tower is heavy damaged and has a steel corset. The reconstruction lasts 2 years from now. So this important landmark of Berlin is not part of the Festival of Lights today, this is an older pic. Thanks for your interest, folks, and thanks for your comments for my older pics. Superb! Berlin is such a vibrant and lively city and this image is simply perfect! I love the mix of old and new, and the whole exciting vibe that Berlin puts forward, even in photographs! This is superb work!
