Description

Sorry about the over-alliteration, but I couldn't resist the urge. This is actually part of a much larger array of standing stones I put together on Halloween, the entire arrangement is in the shape of a viking-style ship burial mound. I suppose it's obvious that I'm fascinated by the standing stones and barrows of the stone-age past, and it certainly inspires my own rock-balancing efforts. But I think my interest lies not in the predictable pagan-past so much as the sense of wonder they express. The universe is an amazing place, and the more we look the more astonishing it gets. The sheer improbability of the things we take for granted every moment of our lives is really quite amazing when you stop to think about it, and I see the ancient monuments like Stonehenge or any of the many arrangements you can find all across Europe and the British Isles as humanity's own efforts to both capture and express the awe, the wonder, and the crazy beauty in this wild and unpredictable universe. So that's my long-winded rant on the subject, but really, I could have said it in a few words, if I'd slowed down the think it through... At any rate, the stones are simply balanced, no strings or glue or photoshop tricks (except the border) nor help from alien anti-gravity pods, just gravity and friction. Thanks for taking a look folks, and I hope you're all faring well on this unique and wonderous day in a unique and wonderous world.

No alien anti-grav pods, huh? I coulda sworn.... LOL! Very cool - I love the way that big one on top is balanced on the small, almost pointed end! That's got to be a real Zen kind of thing - it must take quite a bit of concentration. Thought provoking narrative as well!

That's a great balancing act, though it would be a magnet for kids and perhaps the rock could cause an injury. But then again, there's a cemetary right handy, ha ha! It wouldn't take much paint to make that top rock into a skull.

This might explain your lack of Trick or Treaters on Halloween night... "Kids krushed by kollapsing kairn" Kool! (the Kairn, not the krushed kids)

How did I miss this? Brain fart? I'll just go on and blame that. But the good thing is that I can see it now, and I'm amazed, as always. I really like the way that this resembles a person with a really skinny neck. Kinda like someone sitting for a portrait! This is really nice, and I wonder how long it stayed in place. I suspect a truck driving by would have caused vibrations enough to cause this precarious piece to topple! That I think, is what makes this such a marvelous art form; it cannot last forever, it relegates itself to memory once it decides to no longer fight gravity. Super. Fantastic. Perfect work. Nice colors too!
