Description

My friend lives in Auburn so that is where I set up shop during my stay in Washington. The town, 20 miles south of Seattle, lies in a valley formed by the confluence of the Green and White Rivers. Incorporated in 1891 as a farming community it is a largely industrial town today. Traces of its past, however, can still be seen today. It is an old, slightly worn town. You can grab a sandwich at Andie’s, a fifties style diner where the plump middle-aged waitresses call you sweetheart or darling. And down the street from you hotel is a Russian market where everything is actually from Russia and all the labels are in Cyrillic and big beefy men and their bigger, beefier wives can be seen waiting for their cold cuts at the deli counter. I bought a bottle of Siberian mineral water and the only English on the label was a declaration that this water had come from Borehole #47. So much better than that crap you get from Borehole #45 don't you know.

Ahhhhh ... what a wonderful image! I know that area SO well. I lived in the next town over from about 1968 to about 1976. We went to Auburn for driver's ed, and it's on the way to Enumclaw, where my grandparents lived for nearly 50 years. Aside from this being a little piece of my life, it's just a danged good image! Great composition, interesting subject matter, and the hint of beautiful mountains under the clouds. I can hear the tractor ...
