Description

Captured 7/31/10, at the American Civil War Reenactment, held at the vast and beautiful El Dorado Park in beautiful Long Beach, California. Much better viewed full size. Caught up in all the activity, noise and drama of this momentous event, I must have taken a zillion of these shots. Incidentally, on an unrelated subject, it was 102 Fahrenheit degrees in my patio at 1:30 pm today. Temperature records are being broken daily here in Southern California. Autumn/Fall....what's that? Auf wiedersehen, thankx for dropping by, and for any and all complimentary comments and favs.

Wonderful! I can't help noticing that the troops are mainly remarkably overfed! LOL!

Going into the forties tomorrow night in Florida. Brrrr. I'm really enjoying your Civil War series, Harry.

durleybeachbum and Wolfmanw: Yes, either the result of good Army food, or our decadent present day life style, but there are slender exceptions out there. As Napoleon Bonaparte once said: an Army travels on its stomach.

Another great collage of these war scenes. The air looks quite thick with smoke from the guns so the noise would have been great. You sound to be having a real indian summer.

Looking good as usual my friend. I've noticed a big difference in your Civil War shots versus your outdoor automobile shots. Automobile shots are all in clean, crisp air (mostly near the sea I know). All the Civil War shots have a smoky, somewhat cloudy atmosphere...lots of dust and probably very bright conditions. This is not meant to be a negative comment at all...just an overall observation. P.S. Loved the "Old West" photo link you sent. Fascinating way they dressed. Felt like I was transported back in time.

fascinating comment from bill, although I'm sure the smoke of battle adds to that. But I never thought about the bright saturated light in certain fields, etc. Maybe it's just normal air pollution too, who knows. Anyway more fine enactment, I like the different types of people here, and I noticed the 'portly' few too. Maybe all you say (above)...In any case you gave a good sequence in the top 3, showing what I assume is a leader, being sure his troops are doing it right. And then soldiers in formation (including I assume some Zouaves.) And then a closeup of a formation with varying levels of readiness recorded. More fine captures, harry, in all kinds of mood & action, and it's always nice to see the humanness of these people, as they pay honor to these battles and to the real people who once stood in their shoes. I wonder if these uniforms---suits, almost---were harder to do battle in, than 20th C uniforms: It would be like maneuvering with a coat & tie on. Rushing to grab a pistol with a heavy coat on---in the heat? I'd imagine that would be hard. More glimpses into an older world, and I appreciate all the effort you put into these, to give us so many views and glimpses into what a battle might really look like, if one could get close enough to view it from the side...
