Description

The Hearst Castle, also known as San Simeon was originally named "La Cuesta Encantada" (The Enchanted Hill), by its owner, newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Hearst and Julia Morgan were co-architects. It is located on the Central Coast of California, near the town of San Simeon. It was built between 1919 and 1947. Hearst died in 1951 and the Hearst Corporation donated the property to the state of California in 1957. The story goes that the State of California was the only entity that could afford to maintain the complex. Since that time it has been maintained as a state historic park where the estate, and its considerable collection of art and antiques, is open for public tours. It became a National Historic Landmark on May 11, 1976. The estate itself is five miles (8 km) inland atop a hill of the Santa Lucia Range at an altitude of 1,600 feet (490 m). This photo has taken, in the mid 1980s, from the bottom of that hill and is not the best quality. But it is my first look at the castle just before the bus tour started up the hill. Some info from Wikipedia and photo recently scanned. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Remarkable place. Nice photo Dana. From what I hear the state of California is about at the end of their rope money-wise. Part of their problem may be taking on way to many projects like Hearst Castle:) What do you think?

A beautiful shot of the Castle, Dana! And to think, Hearst called that place a 'ranch'. Ah, but what a view! Both from the Castle and of it. Haven't been there for a while, but it's not too far from our condo in San Simeon but it's always a delight to see.

Haven't made it there in all the times I've been up to San Simeon, but I'd love to see it myself someday. Great shot!
