Description
Again, just a quick experiment with a point of view, just to keep things ticking over :-) Chronologically skipping around in the story once again, we’re back right at the beginning of the first visit to Selinda, before “Chevalier”, “Checkmate” or any of those others. But it follows on quite closely from “Employment.”
Evening at the Law Courts in Selinda and, as the cases end, the clerks and law students spill out into the dusk, like a flock of fancy crows in their gowns and wigs. One of them moves quicker than most – Arrido da Nemia, who is late for an appointment with (the presently ubiquitous) Claudia della Vedra. She isn’t his mistress, but has shown a flattering interest in him and, for an impoverished young scholar trying to make ends meet, the patronage of a great lady would be a very great advantage. In her husband’s absence, she has invited Arrido to visit her. Unable to keep anything to himself, Arrido has boasted about this growing familiarity to his friends and barely anyone in the legal profession is ignorant of the newfound favour he enjoys.
Arrido would have done well to be more careful. When not slaving over his law-books, he has an unhealthy interest in political thought, and he has already published two ambitious pamphlets calling for a reform of the duchy’s politics. So far he’s been protected only by the pamphlets’ anonymity, but with a third article recently submitted to the press, which is more outspoken in criticising Don Fernando (heir to the duchy), Arrido is becoming too dangerous. He thinks too much and understands too little. Moreover, it now seems that he is the new favourite of a woman who has been one of Don Fernando’s unrealised ambitions for a long time.
It’s time for Arrido to go; and he must go quietly and without scandal that can be traced back to Don Fernando. And so a foreigner is brought in, on a recommendation from Antalia – Francesco, who has little idea as yet of how events in Selinda will impact on him. He waits patiently as Arrido’s friends treat him to a final round of envious mockery, and Addio bounds blithely down the steps on his way to Claudia’s house – blissfully ignorant that his road will be short. Very short.
P.S. Thank you so much for all the lovely comments on the recent uploads - always love reading them :-)
