Description
Not doing much art these days, at least not anything that I finish, mostly due to overwork. I had some days off, so I thought I'd give things a try. But I'm not sure I'm 100% happy with the result. The ship model (a fifteen minute sketch that turned out to be a fifteen hour modeling adventure) turned out okay, but I had a real struggle with the planets.
The reddish black thing is Pluto. I used a color map from NASA and then did the enhanced bump map from Bryce 7. It's got a bit of a chaotic feel to it, but we'll see in five years how off I am. The foreground world is Charon. I did a touch of displacement on it to make it less than perfectly round, but I'm not sure you can tell. The displacement effect seems to work poorly on a large object in shadow (like a planet), but I may need more practice. Background courtesy ESO.

The Deep Cruiser Odysseus was the Colonial Confederation's flagship in the years between independence and the formation of the broader interstellar Confederation a few decades later. At nearly six hundred meters long, it was more hubris than practical warship. It had that massive 25 meter forward laser blister, but for the tonnage and cost, it was proportionally underarmed. It had the most efficient engines in the fleet and best delta V, over 5000kps. That suited it well to deep patrols in the Kuiper, but its maximum performance was .12 gees, which in combat, would have made it a sitting duck.
Finished in 2287, it patrolled the Outer System for twenty-five years before being mothballed in orbit out around Varuna were it remains to this date, a defiant relic of independence from Earth.

Really excellent space scene!

I really like the ship model, especially the story that goes with it. Very cool concept. As for the planets, I guess my feeling is that for the most part they look good, but perhaps the edges are all a bit too sharp and clean? Not sure how to change that in Bryce, which is why I tend to do alot of post work in Photoshop for my planets and moons. I like the overall image, it looks really cool!

Excellent work!!!

Great ship, and like the textures on the planets (or whatever they're called :D) I agree with Nefarious about the edges-- aren't displacement maps supposed to affect the silhouette?

The Dwarf Planet has two more moons... as known by now It will be amazing photo's that we hope to see in a couple of years perhaps it will be like Triton.. with fountains of material.. Charon and Pluto hold eachother in a lock-dance.. their mutual gravity will have created landscapes we can not imagine.. Perhaps it is as violent as Enceladus.. Perhaps it is even like Io.. I do not expect the peace of Luna or the other calm moons Everywere we went so far, the Solar system had surprises for us. The sad thing here will be that the robot will fly over it in so called "no time" ... giving us more questions than answers. One wishes there was an extra power source that could have slowed it down and put it in orbit.. as now it will be over too soon... and there is no more money to go there during my / our life time..

Nice render of the ninth planet. I can't wait for New Horizons to get there!

Very cool ship model,a shame you can't see all the work you put into it due to the darkness of space!I like the lights that you've added to it,and the overall design.I'm still working out the displacement part of Bryce 7 Pro,so I can't offer any advice there yet...what setting did you use?It should break up the silhouette more than it has, which makes me think it should be a higher setting.I like the background used...did you use it as IBL to light the scene? Excellent work as usual.Good to see something new from you!

That is one impressive looking spaceship! I like the overall darkness of the render, too.
